Tuscany!

Hi All!

I am about to embark on Tuscany! I am super excited. I sub'd the yarn for a Karabella cashmere. (I know, this is blasphemous, but I fell in love with the yarn...and the pattern looks like it will be perfect for it!)

Anyway, I will be making 2 of them (Christmas gifts) and I was wondering how many hours it took some of you out there to make Tuscany? (Obviously, everyone is different, but if I could get a rough estimate it will help me plan better. I always bite off more than I can chew when it comes to gifts for the holiday season!)

Can't wait to post progress pics once I get started!

Cables and Os

I have finished knitting the body and the sleeves. The sleeves need to be attached but since I won't have the time over the next few days and I don't want to loose time, I will be knitting the neckband. Once I have and evening alone at home those sleeves are going on. I can't wait! Soon I will be wearing this sweater, not just hauling it around with me. giggle.

I have to browse though that book to see what's up next.

Hi All! I just wanted to post this finished Tuscany that I have been working on for what seems like forever (I'm always amazed how long a project takes when I have other projects on the needle, I may never learn). I've been working on this since last year, since it's pretty much the same thing over and over I worked on other projects at the same time. This Tuscany is a thank you present for my mom, she is taking me on 2 week Mediterranean cruise. I thought that the pattern was so pretty and I made it with 2 skeins of Handmaiden Seasilk in color Capri because of the sea cell/cruise link and the color Capri and where we are going on vacation.

I finally started my CPH! After skulking around the KAL forever, I've finally gotten around to casting on. It's Cascade 200 Heathers #9406 celery (I think). So far, so good! I couldn't hit gauge, so I've divided my gauge into the stitch count and seem to be doing well (knitted on sz 7 needles)

Mutating Tomato

I'm making progress with my Tomato (after a LONG hiatus) and I've decided that I'd like to make the sleeves closer to elbow length, but I'm not entirely positive about how to do that. Can I just knit 1.5 inches in SS before I add the ribbing, or will that make the sleeves wonky?

Tuscany and Cables and Os

I made my Tuscany with a cotton yarn in purple. I added beads along the edges.

I also added a few rows of garter stitch at the long edge.

I enjoyed knitting this shawl and will probably make another, more delicate version.

I am currently working on Cables and O's using Cotton Glace. Here's my progress so far:

It seems to be a good balance between easily memorized and therefore an easy knit and not being too monotonous and boring. I am looking forward to wearing it. Someday.

a vegan in Tuscany

Well, my second Tuscany is off the needles - this time a vegan version made with Rosarios Bio Bamboo!

It's for a vegan coworker of mine - hence the yarn choice.

Can't say I loved the bamboo as much as the Silken, but it was still fun to work with. A great pattern as well.

Hello All!

I'm on my second project from the book the Tuscany Shawl (the first was the Cables an O's Sweater, which I still really love). I have never really knitted lace before and I wanted to try and I knew from what people were posting on Ravelry it seemed like a good first lace project. I have to say that after this first two or three repeats I got the hang of it. I really do appreciate the fact that every other row is a purl row. This is good because when I have had to rip back there was a solid row to rip back to, unlike some patterns that have you rip back to complicated yarn overs and such.

So here is a picture I took a couple of days ago, with about 5 1/2 repeats (I'm up to 7 1/2 repeats as of right now).

It pretty much looks the same just a bit longer, it's amazing how much knitting you can do in 5 hours before the Uber-Bowl. I'm using Handmaiden Sea Silk (not the Silken that was called for in the pattern) it's not as heavy as the original yarn but it's very nice. I'm using Addi Turbo's Lace needles in size 5 (32 inches long). It's going to be a gift for my mom, here is an up-close picture.

It's been so nice to see what everyone is working on, and to have the opportunity to add to the site.

Here is my finished Tomato. Overall I'm very happy with it, except that I am planning to redo the neckline, making it in corrugated ribbing. I knit the 35 1/2" taking into account the cotton and negative ease. I moved the herringbone pattern below my bust taking the cue from Sandi Wiseheart from Knitting Daily. I also use the CC on the very bottom of Tomato, for the ribbing on the arms, and then use the MC after the CC on the arms. A modeled version of my final Tomato to come soon....

Hello! I'm new to the KAL and am looking for anyone who has knit the Manly Maze in the called for yarn (Lanaknits Allhemp6). I ran across one other post on the internet from someone who said they did not like knitting with the hemp yarn (hurt their hands, difficulty getting gague, poor knitting fabric quality). Any advice or insight anyone might have about knitting with this yarn would be greatly appreciated.

Eileen in the round

I decided to knit Eileen in the round, rather than on straight needles. I knitted in the round until the armpits, then switched to straight needles for the front and back. It helped to break up the monotony of knitting only lace or only stockinette, as I had to knit both for each round. My plan was perfect, until I realized that I had been knitting the lace pattern in one direction only - so I had to learn to do it backward when I switched to the straight needles! A few attempts got ripped out before I finally got it right.

I used Rosarios 4 Bio Bamboo (100% bamboo) and I must say, I am extremely pleased with the result. It is so soft, and a bit drapey, though I think it turned out lovely! I used 4 mm needles to get anything near the gauge recommended for the pattern.

Bio Bamboo is wonderful stuff, but I think they were out to lunch when they printed the label. The yarn label's gauge is 27 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches with 5 mm needles, but I couldn't even get that gauge with2.75 mm needles (I got 25 sts and 30 rows). And I always knit to gauge. So I wouldn't trust the label, and recommend ALWAYS knitting a gauge swatch with this one.

I finished Network, but I didn't get the same result as the photo in the book. Instead of the yarnovers alternating every 8 rows, they alternated every 16 rows. Still looks cool, and didn't warrant trashing the project, but I wonder why it happened?? I had some confusion when it came to the rows which required moving the marker, so perhaps I did an extra pattern repeat before ending the round and offset the lace pattern by just enough to cause the problem?

I knitted it in a lovely soft pink Rowan Classic Cashcotton 4 ply yarn, which was a bit finer than the recommended yarns, but worked OK.

I finished Tuscany! I started this project in June with some stash yarn, Bernat Satin in Bordeaux (a worsted weight yarn) and used size 6 needles. Because it's worsted, I ended up doing 8 repeats instead of 11.

It's still drying, though inside now. It was unseasonably warm today (23C, 75F), great for laying it out on the porch.

After sitting down in the same chair and knitting for about 12 hours almost non-stop. (Moi, not eat, mais non!)

It actually looks better up close and personal. It fits and I'm glad. The O's part kind of give a little "air conditioning" - perfect for a lightweight sweater. I used cotton and linen and besides the striping, also made a change by crocheting a band around the neck and the button/buttonhole bands.

Now, on to the next:)

Intro and Bob

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking here for awhile. I signed up for the KAL shortly after I got the book because I knew I would knit several patterns from it. I had plans to post about my progress on my Tomato sweater (which I am calling Bob because of Bob the Tomato on Veggietales). But I knit it and was almost finished other than the ribbing on the neck and sleeves and realized I didn't have a square neck I had a V neck because I hadn't added in the stitches for the bottom of the neck before joining in the round. So obviously it didn't fit either. :) So I had to rip way back and am not just past the color work again. So frustrating. But this is my first piece of color work so my second time around I learned to do it with a color in each hand and I love it. Here are my pics. to keep on with the Cables and Os sweater! Here's where I was as of Friday night:

Last night, while out and waiting for a concert to begin, I started the second sleeve and continued to work on it during down times at church this a.m. - I WILL get this thing done. I'm going to do some sort of striped edging band/collar combo thing - I know I'm supposed to use the "Os" for buttonholes on one side, but it's just that eentsy weentsy bit small and an extra couple of inches will be just the ticket to the ease I needs! OK women (and men, sorry!) I'm goin' in....... If I'm not back in two weeks, send a search party (or any kind - I like parties)......

I just wanted to pop in and say that I am over half-way through my Tuscany shawl, 8 (or 16 markers) repeats so far. I ended up going to my LYS and getting 3 skiens of Sea Silk on purple. YUM! I love working with this yarn! I also bought some more of the other silk that I blogged about earlier. Turns out it is Regia Silk in a lovely green. Now I can also finish the first shawl. Yay!

I'm not giving up! I'm going to a conference this weekend - maybe I'll take it with me and make a dent in the sleeves. I have short arms, but fortunately not this short!

Mint Tomato

Here's my version of Tomato:

I used Cotton Ease in the discontinued colors Mint and Blueberry.

This was my first sweater, and my first attempt at 2-color knitting! Although this wasn't a hard pattern, I started this back in July! I'm glad I finally finished it :) I think I should have added a bit more ribbing to the sleeves, and bound-off the sleeves and body directly from the ribbing rather than adding the extra row of plain knitting.

I love what everyone is making! I really like Tuscany and the River Rock Scarf, so one of those may be my next project from the book :)

More Morrigan Errors

I found two more errors in the pattern.

1) After completing the sleeve increases, the pattern says to repeat rows 19–24 or 7–12 (depending on size) of charts R3 and L3 until the sleeve is the right length. You should repeat rows 17–24 or 5–12 to keep the pattern correct.

2) Row 23 of chart L3 is missing a cable crossing. The position and type of the cable crossing should be obvious to anyone who has gotten that far on the sleeve.

A Finished Cables and O's

After a last big concentrated knitting effort (nothing but knitting for the last 4 days) I'm finally finished my Cables and Os sweater and one week before my deadline for the special event (Wicked in L.A) I wanted to wear it to. I loved this pattern, it was the first time I had knitted the entire body in one piece and the first time that I knitted both sleeves at the same time. I chose the exact same yarn and the same color that the pattern called for because I really liked the way it looked. Generally speaking I'm not a huge fan of cotton but this yarn (60% cotton 40% linen) was great to work with and I would highly recommend knitting this pattern with this yarn. It has been great to see everyones projects, they have all been very beautiful, happy knitting and KAL-ing to all!

Blue Tomato finished (finally)

Sorry about the photo (took it myself!)... But you get the idea. I started this waaaaayyy back in July! Or was it June? I used just over 3 skeins of Cotton-Ease in Lake, and a small amount of 1 skein of Maize. The cotton-ease is actually quite nice, but I do wish they had more vibrant colors. This was my first try at stranded knitting, and I think I need a bit more practice! I can see the areas where I pulled the yarn too tightly (I'm a thrower, but I tried continental for the last few rows to speed things up). I could also use some practice picking up stitches, which I did rather inconsistently around the collar. All in all....it did go quickly, considering the time I put in. And I'm ready for another sweater!

The Sweet Indulgence Robe is finished. Behold it reclining artistically in its pre-button-and-button-loop stage on top of the unsorted (clean) laundry.

I am not a fast knitter. This has been going on for weeks, maybe months if I add in all the geeking/research, but it's beautiful. Thanks to Deb White's clever design, there was no post-knitting assembly to do, so I finished it in time to accompany my daughter to the UK for her year of study abroad.

To college-student-proof it, I used Cascade Pima Tencel, double stranding throughout, except for the bottom edge and the cuffs, where I triple stranded.

For the record, despite the washing instruction on the label, the robe is machine washable and dryable and doesn't shrink. Which translates to: work the robe to the post-blocking gauge and measurements.

I do seem to recall one or more people posting here that they used only two skeins of Silken to make the Tuscany. For the life of me, I can't find those posts now, though.

Any thoughts? Stitch-ay Woman thinks it's a go. :-)

Cable and O's Progress

The last time I posted about a month ago my Cable and O's sweater wasn't very far along, I had just started and had only completed 4 repeats, but at 288 stitches per row that was still a mighty fine accomplishment. However after a month of dedicated knitting I finished the entire body tonight, it's off the needles and I feel a great sense of accomplishment.

As you can see the pattern calls for you to knit the back and the two fronts together in one piece. Towards the end it was a bit cumbersome but the pay-off is less seaming and the entire of the body of the sweater is done.

I decided to use the exact same yarn in the same color as in the book, Queensland Cotolino in fuchsia. I'm not a pink person, but I really do like the color, and I;m really glad I'm not sick of it yet. Here is a close-up:

All I have left is two sleeves, one button band (the side with the button holes is already on the sweater, you use the eyelets, smart huh?), and the neck band. Hopefully I will be able to power through and finish it up because I would love to wear it to a special event we have in the first week of October, hopefully grad-school work won't get in the way to much. It's been great to see everyone's projects, keep up the good work!

I got the rest of the back done on the Cables and Os sweater: and yes, I am using the Magic Loop method to knit the sleeves one at a time in the round! I also couldn't resist sewing the shoulder seams together, so I could do a quick fit test. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. But boy, do I look FAT in these horizontal stripes, LOL. Actually, the cable is vertical, so next one of these I make (oh yes, there will be another one) will be in one color so the vertical is more apparent, LOL! Note the dark band in the middle, LOL! Think it'll do me any good?

I've finished the front! (after a brief hiatus into the world of lace...)
(pre blocking)

I'm posting this in progress as I wanted to show a colour modification I made within the front of the top:

I'm not sure how clearly it comes out in the photos. However, I reversed the colour patterning midway through the top, so that colour A (brown) became colour B (teal) and vice versa. This was borne out of practical necessity because otherwise I was going to end up running out of the brown!

A Funny Story

This weekend I visited the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival with my 6 year old daughter.
It was our first time there. I mainly wanted to shop, but we also enjoyed the herding and shearing demos; and my daughter took a "Teach Ewe To Knit" class - and she actually learned. I'm so proud of her. But while shopping, I came across something puzzling.

One of the vendors (a larg-ish yarn shop) had No Sheep For You prominently displayed on the table. Hmm, that's not something you should see at the Sheep and Wool Festival, is it?

I must confess that this is NOT the geeky swatch... but the beginning of the sweater (which I started tonight). Colour choice due in large part to (and inspired by) the lovely "extra" in a recent swap package from our very own Stitchay Woman! The two yarns pictures are SWTC, one soysilk, one bamboo.

Has anyone else started this top? It's a great knit so far, and makes me feel so clever! ;-)

The colors are more muted and pretty. I used Sea Pearl from Briar Rose Fibers, and I loved working with it--it's a gorgeous yarn. I know it has wool in it, and I'm sorry I cheated, but that's what was in my stash that seemed to work best with this pattern.

Amy Singer, author of "No Sheep for You"!! Look at all that YUMMY yarn in front of Amy!! She gave a FABULOUS lesson on the other types of yarns that exist out there besides wool. We got to touch and feel all the luscious yarns in the book and even knit with some hemp and bamboo - heaven!! We also got to see and touch some of the geeky things from the book :-)

Here is Amy signing my "Knit Wit" book (she also signed my "No Sheep For You" Book). She was so amazing to speak with as well and gave us a tour through the yarn shop too, Loop Yarn in Philadelphia, explaining all the benefits of each yarn there and how to substitute it for other yarns. What a fabulous morning!!

I'm packing this up to take with me on vacation (well sort of). I mean, really folks, first things first. This thing is really starting to move along. Well, of course it does when you're not knitting 352-stitch rows, LOL! And by the way, I'm not as slim as the picture below might indicate! The stitch holders for the back are gathering up a LOT of stitches. I did take a brief break from knitting last night to check the left front against my own and it appears that this thing will actually fit -at least I hope so after all this work.

I think I said somewhere that this will be my most documented sweater and I think I was right!

Gotta go pack! whoo hoo. New tire, not a lotta geld, but who cares!

I'm ready to shape the shoulders on the Cables and Os for the left front and am wondering whether I should attempt short row shoulder shaping or just follow the dang directions? Any votes? Here's what I'm gonna do (since I'm now officially on vacation, sorta kinda and have a little bit of time for a learning experience): I'm going to try to do short row shaping and see if I can do it in the number of rows the directions call for. If it doesn't work, I can always rip back a few rows, so really, what's the harm?

UPDATE: I'm going to play it safe and follow the directions. I do not have enough experience with short row shaping to know how to change things. Maybe next time, LOL!

OK, so I've had a busy work week. So I have a life (or two). So that means my sweater is taking longer. But I'm still having fun:

Is it a good sign when your sweater starts to remind you of a hula skirt, LOL:)? I'm having fun with it - although this pic is a bit faded in the color department, changing with every pattern repeat has helped with the monotony. another 30 or so rows and I'll be starting to divide the sides from the front and starting (GASP) the armhole shaping! whoo Hoo!!! I'm also really looking forward to doing the attached i-cord for the edgings. OK, so I'm a rebel, what can I say?

I realized that I never posted my first set of goodies on here. The little Lantern Moon notebook is the perfect size to jot down knitting ideas while out and about, and since I had just purchased a single skein of Hemp for Knitting in chocolate brown before I got this periwinkle skein in my package, I now have the perfect amount for a very nice hemp wristlet.

I just wanted to say that I'm slowly but surely working on my Cable and O's, I love the pattern and the yarn it calls for so much that I picked the same color for my own (Queensland Cotolino in Fushia) Here is a picture of the progress so far.

It's taking awhile to complete each row since it's the fronts and back together, but it's worth it. Again so sorry about the arrant skirt post (it's so embarrassing). Everyone's projects look lovely, happy knitting all.

A new member....And Tomato!!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on the No Sheep KAL (although I have been lurking!). I finished my Tomato about 2 months ago. I used Knit Picks Main Line in Wedgewood (main color) and Silver Sage (contrasting color). I had to increase my needle size to get gauge. This was my first sweater EVER! I learned so much and I loved every second of it. If you look at the pic, you'll see that I missed a row in the color section and ended up with 4 sections instead of the larger 3. Instead of a mistake, I like to think of it as a design feature!

Also, I am trying to decide on a Christmas gift for my mother. I am torn between Tuscany and Bacardi. I want something extra special for her, but with work and school I need my knitting to still be relaxing. Any suggestions?

I just joined the KAL and wanted to say hello to everyone! My name is Rebecca, nickname by all is Becka, my blog is Whimsical Knitting. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you!
I've been knitting for 3 years now and have been fascinated with the non-wool yarns since I discovered SWTC (my fave yarn co.) in 2005 and this book was a MUST HAVE considering my love for such fibers!
There are countless patterns that I would like to knit from the book, but have knit none yet! My hubby and I are in the process of losing weight, then the garment knitting begins! The "Manly Maze" is #1 on my list to knit for the hubby!

I have to say I LOVE, LOVE all of the lovelies ya'll have been knitting! And, I'm quite sorry to have missed the swap, looks like it was a blast!

Just wanted to say hi to Ms. Amy Singer, wherever she is, and thank her for signing my books in Bainbridge at Churchmouse Yarns. I couldn't get off work that day, but a friend of mine works by that store, so my friend went in to get a book signed for me, and Amy not only signed a copy of Big Girl Knits for me (which was a surprise gift from the friend in question) but also a bookplate sticker for my copy of NSFY, which was with me at the time.

Pink Tomato

My pink tomato is finished. It was a really fun, quick knit. It's knit with "stash", Summer Soft (Filatura Lanarota) 60% Rayon and 40% Acrylic from Smileys Yarns....at only $1.99 a ball. I made it in the 48", which gave me a negative ease of about 2" and really like the fit. I extended the length by a couple of inches and made the neckline higher than the pattern called for.

...it wasn't working! I'm (trying) to make Tuscany in Handmaiden Silken and no matter what I did I couldn't get the stitch definition to come out right. I kept trying smaller and smaller needles until I was wondering if toothpicks might be a better choice. So onto the internet I go and do a little research. Turns I didn't buy Silken, I bought Lace. Oi! So at lunch I go home, get my #4 circs and a ball of Regal Silk I had lying around and knit up a swatch.... Lo and Behold! Stitch definition!!!!
Now my delimma is whether or not to go to my LYS and buy more of the Regal Silk (which is an alpaca/silk/poly blend I think and way cheaper) or splurge on Sea Silk or Silken.

Well, now that the lime green Tuscany is done, I was contemplating another Interweave yummy from KNITS Spring 2007, the Cable-Down Raglan (very yummy ocean blue with wonderful cabling pattern), when I thought that maybe I could do the Morrigan, so I looked at the book again...it made my head spin...my life is WAY to complicated right now (zen meditation camp for a month in the mountains might be too complicated for that one, but I still want to do it someday...I applaude those that are doing it), so I looked at Cables and Os...I had a random skein of Debbie Bliss cotton cashmere in "cream" (85% cotton-15% cashmere...not totally "no sheep") and knitted up this geeky thing. It was my first time knitting with this yarn and it is FABU...I've placed a few bids on eBay to snag a "few" more skeins. I'll keep you all posted.

After swatching, buying yarn, photocopying charts and pasting them up, I finally cast on Friday night. Then I discovered I'd not left enough tail, so I ripped it out and started over. I got to the "end" of the first row and realized I'd left out the side charts, so I did that over. Things did improve though and now I've got about an inch of sweater and have changed up to the larger needles. The Rowan Calmer feels so very nice that it's a good incentive to work on it even when the cables are being pesky.

I came home today to find a box on my doorstep, yay! I was a bit confused at first because it was making a lot of noise and my first thought was, "oh no, something's broken". Everything was okay, it was just the Cremesavers rattling around...and seriously, if you haven't eaten the apple pie and cinnamon bun ones, you must get some now!

Besides the Cremesavers, my box contained a super cute knitting cake measuring tape, a nice card and two lovely skeins of yarn. The first one is Panda Cotton in "fall herbs" which is a lovely mix of greens, burgundy and orange. I adore it. The second skein is Patagonia nature cotton in colorway 203 which is beautiful.

OK, so it's not a pattern from the book, but the yarn was reviewed here on 4/3/07: Madil Eden. The pattern is from Knitty.com, called Soleil. The bamboo yarn has gorgeous drape, a very silky feel, and is a good price ($6.95 at my LYS). Unfortunately, the sweater is a gift for my sister so I can't enjoy it. I'm seriously thinking of frogging another project with this yarn so I can make a Soleil for myself.

I took it for show-n-tell at my LYS. The owner of the shop insisted on trying it on so she could judge which size to make for herself, and printed off the pattern right then.

I have a sneaking suspicion that mine is going to be too big and I would like to frog it now rather than later when I've spent more time knitting it. A Striped Tomato

Well, I tried to resist. Really I did. I told myself I could NOT buy yarn for a Tomato. And since I didn't have enough to make one I thought I was safe. But then I realized I could make STRIPES! I used TLC Cotton Plus in the mint green, cream, and pink. Less than 1 skein of each. I made the 31.5 inch size which fit me (35") perfect. Excuse the slightly wonky photo, taken by my 6 year old which is why I look like a giant!! When can I make another?!

More Progress

Well, as you can see, I'm making progress, thanks to the Columbia Knitting Meetup at Borders:) I had a blast knitting in front of my cup of coffee, and blabbing away about knitting and whatever else came to mind last night. It was a nice, cheap fun way to enjoy myself. And I had been a good doo-bee and got my work done, so there!

It's interesting that I started this on regular straight needles, in size 2 and had a hellacious time cramming all 352 stitches on even the 14" needles, but now using the size 4 circular (this one's an Addi-Turbo) the linen (green) seems to behave better. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the cables pull everything in a bit. I think I'm going to hem up the ribbing to tone down some of the linen's poofy-ness and then use a green i-cord edging for all the "raw" edges of the sweater to match the "roundness" of the turned up ribbing. We'll see. Why not try a new skill, right?

I just love the way this is coming along - a lot of fun because the pattern is easy to remember yet not boring and deadly as I fear stockinette would have been.

Cables & Os and Boy do I feel STUPID!!

Hello everybody! Please accept my apologies. I tried to import all my postings on the various blogs and KALs I belong to onto my wordpress blog. What happened was that all the entries posted by all of you wonderful people ended up looking like I had posted them (DOH!!!). At first I thought it might be OK to post a disclaimer, but I began to feel more and more like a thief and had determined that I would remove those entries. Then I got an e-mail from one of our list managers indicating that a bunch of you had seen what had happened and were concerned (or maybe even - understandably - confused, or even angry! Well, I am very very sorry - and I have removed those entries. There may be a few more left from another KAL, which I am also working on removing (I have to do them one at a time and there are thousands). First - a big THANK YOU to Amy and all the other people who made NS4U possible. I love wool, and pretty much used it exclusively (plus alpaca & a bit of mohair), but now I've expanded my horizons into SeaSilk, hemp, and other lovelies. 100% Silk is really awesome! :) I'm also spinning and knitting in a finer gauge, so I should be able to crank out some wearables for the non-winter seasons. Yay!

The small beads that I chose the first time around kept sliding out & around the stitches. After 2 rows of completed rocks, I realized that this was just going to get worse the more the scarf was handled so I went out for more beads. I wound up buying beads that were too big & went back out for ones that are hopefully just right.
I started with the size 3 needles again. A few of the beads were too big & would have landed on top of each other in the row so I skipped a column.
I decided to switch to size 4 for the body of the scarf. Looking at the 1st 2 “rocks”, I need to focus on keeping the beads visually balanced rather than counting the number of beads since the beads are so different in size.
I broke down and bought some of the new Addi Turbo Lace needles. I really like my wood/bamboo ones but the yarn kept getting stuck in the joins. Considering what a royal pain sliding the beads back & forth without getting tangles is, I decided that the extra expense was worth having one less thing to fiddle with.

Hello, I'm Susan aka Knitters-Delight. I still have to go out and purchase the book (I have a 20% off coupon from Borders - so I'm going to make sure to run out and grab it today), but I'm planning on doing Tomato as my first project, which I've already downloaded the pattern for. I order yarn from Little Knits online and it has already arrived! I'm using King Tut cotton in a beautiful burgandy colorway. The accent color is a sleek silver. I'm very excited. Since I live in San Diego now after years in Vermont, no sheep knitting makes great sense. Feel free to stop by my blog and say "hello". This will be my first color stand/fair isle project, so I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions.

A few things I've learned

One thing about the Cables and Os pattern is that it's very forgiving. I'm having a lot of fun with the yarns and even though I'm not particularly thrilled to be knitting in stripes and I may have to do something about the linen ribbing, cotton yarn with the size 4 needles is a lovely combination. I'm getting good stitch definition and it's not a hard pattern to internalize, if you will. When I say forgiving, the only problem I seem to have consistently is remembering the yarn overs for the "O" part of the pattern - the mini lace column. I've learned that even if I miss one of them, it is ever so easy to simply correct on the wrong side without even having to tink back and fix it. I simply pick up a stitch as if to do a make 1, but I don't twist the stitch, thereby leaving the lovely little gap that makes the "O." Even the stripes are working out to a change every pattern repeat - though I may change the order of the colors as I get toward the midsection. And finally this I should have mentioned in my initial postings: when dividing for right front, back and left front, I decided to divide along the pattern repeats with the idea that the two additional stitches I've left on each side of the front (total of four) need to be accounted for in the armhole shaping and when it comes time to divide front and back. It's just a lot easier to do it that way while completing the bulk of the bottom, more straightforward knitting. Does this make sense to you? I sometimes have trouble putting the pictures in my head into words (I hear there's medication for that, must look into it.....)

Red Alert! Error in Morrigan!

It's probably not a major red alert seeing as I'm probably one of about 10 knitters worldwide who are knitting Morrigan. (I found 3 others started on the web, I'm not the only crazy one.) BUT it is a major error.

I emailed Jenna and her entire response is below. The error is in the number of times that rows 69–76 of the Side Chart are worked.

Crap! you're right! That should have been 4 times. I checked back
through all my drafts, and I had written it as 6, (6, 8, 8, 8, 8)
throughout, but obviously the math doesn't work that way!

Because I used AppleWorks (since uninstalled and I don't know what we
did with the install disks), I can't check the spreadsheet notes to
figure out where the mistake originated... all my text notes show
that I miscounted, and evidently thought that rows 77-84 of the side
chart were only 6 rows, not 8. The tech editor must have done the
same thing, too!

So, the Side chart should indicate that the repeats of rows 69-76 are
4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6). Here's the logic:

Total rows before bind-offs according to Chart A count: 140 (140,
156, 156, 164, 164)

Side:
4 rows of foundation pattern (chart rows 1-2)
8 rows of patt (chart rows 3-10 x 1)
32 (32, 40, 40, 40, 40) rows of rep (chart rows 11-18)
50 rows of patt (chart rows 19-68 x 1)
--at this point, we've worked 94 (94, 102, 102, 102, 102) rows; 46
(46, 54, 54, 62, 62) to go before bind-off--
32 (32, 40, 40, 48, 48) rows of rep (chart rows 69-76 x 4 (4, 5, 5,
6, 6))
8 rows of patt (chart rows 77-84 x 1)
--this adds 40 (40, 48, 48, 56, 56) rows; another 6 rows to work
following rows 85-92 as necessary--

Thinking about it, I'm positive I kept counting rows 77 to 84 as 6
rows, because I recall I thought that it would end neatly with row 84
for the smallest size, and then I must have incorporated that set of
rows into the repeat count by accident. You could, if you wished,
treat this as a 5x repeat, which means that instead of working rows
77-84 before the bind-off, you'd only work rows 77-82; on the bind-
off row, you'd integrate three double decreases. This would make the
cable pattern fill the underarm all the way up to the bind-off,
rather than leaving a 6-row gap of reverse stockinette across those 9
rows. [edit: she means "those 9 stitches"]

Well. Considering the complexity of the pattern, I'm grateful that
you found only this and that symbol in row 1 in Chart B...

I received from my no sheep swap partner yeserday- a wonderful ball of ivory colored Hempathy! It's SO soft and luscious! Absolutely fantastic.

It was also perfect timing, as it was the last day for a co-worker's who picks up our mail. He always teases me about all the packages I receive, so bringing me a big envelope from "The Yarn Fairy" made us all laugh! "The yarn fairy? The yarn fairy?"

LOL:) But man, I made a lot of progress last night! A few things: (1) I'm doing stripes to make my way through stash rather than buying a sh*tload of new yarn, (2) I'm slipping the first stitch of every row - because it'll be easier to pick up stitches for the button band and it will look nicer on the side where we won't have a button band (did not realize that part because it's not in the picture and Karen F pointed that out to me yesterday (DOH!!!); and (3) whenever possible USE CIRCULAR NEEDLES (ahhhh that's better:)).

PS - Stitch count is now down to 352 - gauge measurement was a bit off the other night/with straight needles. (when have i ever been straight?)

PPS - yarns are either linen (green) or cotton (pinks/neutral). Am hoping the linen part looks better after washing.

This pic is cross-posted from my blog. It illustrates the value of SWATCHING!!! Folks, when they say a size TWO needle for the Cables & Os pattern, they don't mean a size SIX needle, LOL. (oops....) I'm a big girl but not a size 6X! After a night of sitting at my local knitting meetup (for the first time, BTW), I now have another inch added to the above cast-on twisted ribbing - and the interesting half of my first button hole (although they don't tell you to do one in the instructions - but where is it written I have to be a good girl all the time?? Since pictures are better in daylight with my phone camera thingie, I'm waiting until morning to post more.
